THe Gardner Caroling Tradition
Tuesday night the Gardner family loaded into the van to go caroling. This has become a most favorite tradition in our family over the years. As you can see by the picture, there are some definite perks to singing to your friends and neighbors! But way past the generous goodies we seem to accumulate along the way, there are choice experiences and memories that make the season extra bright for us. There is a wonderful spirit of love and joy that is shared between our family and those that open the door to us. There is pleasant surprise, immediate smiles, happiness and often tears. Whatever the circumstance that might be going on before the door is opened, the true spirit of Christmas takes over, for those ten minutes or so there is peace, friendship and a feeling of joy shared between us. What gratitude I have for the gospel of Jesus Christ. How glorious it is to know we are all truly brothers and sisters and that he was born to save us all. May that true joy find a place in our hearts, may we allow it stay awhile, that it can become a feeling we allow to grow and change us for the better.

"Merry Christmas"
I've noticed a difference this year. As I have been out and about weather it be the mall or the dentist, I am hearing "Merry Christmas", not, "Have a happy holiday".
I'm feeling happy about this.
It seems believing people are finding their "backbone" again. I for one, have grown tired of my beliefs being lost to "the church of the political right." Yesterday I said very clearly, "Merry Christmas" to the cashier, receptionist and bag boy. No one seemed upset, in fact they seemed extra happy to reciprocate a cheery "Merry Christmas" back.
This morning I signed a teachers weekly report for Rilyn to return to school. She wrote, "Happy Holidays" on the paper,(she's probably not allowed to write anything else, I understand that) I lightly penciled out H.H., signed my name and wrote Merry Christmas on the paper back to her.
To be honest, Rilyn seemed a bit miffed because I ran my pencil lead through H.H. maybe that wasn't necessary, but I wanted to say something-make a small statement, so I did.
It seemed right at the time.It seems right now too.
Merry Christmas.

The Old Grey Box
The Old Grey Box
(Sung to the tune of “The Old Grey Mare”)
The old gray box,
It ain't where it used to be
Ain't where it used to be,
Ain't where it used to be
The old gray box,
It ain't where it used to be
Were so glad to see it go!
We’re so glad to see it go!
We’re so glad to see it go!
The old gray box,
It ain't where it used to be
Oh we grew to hate it so!
The old gray box,
It sat on the back drive way,
It sat there ugly day by day,
What more can we say?
We’re so happy to see it go!

Love the Google Video Chat!
If any of you haven't signed on to the Google Video Chat yet, you should. Totally cool. Sunday, we got to talk to and see Caitlin. It was so fun! She would leave the room a second to run and get her friends down the hall, she'd say "Hey do you want to come meet my family?". They'd come in and we could talk, wave hello and actually interact with her friends there.
If you've got a comp. with a camera in it, check it out.

halloween time.
Come one, come all--I just thought I'd go ahead add my two cents of Halloween-ness into the mix of things.
I think we all know that Halloween isn't really my favorite ordeal. It just doesn't do all that much for me. Regardless, I went through a mental list of activities I could take part in to occupy my night.
I had the apartment to myself for a while... so i decided to clean :) Why not do something productive and enjoy some lovely Frank Sinatra while I was at it? Plus a few cute kids stopped by to trick-or-treat <3> little visitors, and old jazz to fill my soul... what can compare to that? :) haha. The next question was... "What to do next?"
Here are the options I had:
- Party with Kamden and her friends. [potentially a fine time]
- Go to the Heritage Halls Central Building for a "Haunted Hollywood" Dance. [blah]
- Study for my American Heritage Midterm [haha- rigggght]
- SLEEEP [sounded pretty nice]
- -or- Chill at "home" and find a movie to watch [was quite fitting to my mood]
Here is what ended up happening:
- I did Christi's makeup all pretty and shimmery for her Halloween costume. She was a dragonfly--THAT was so FUN! Makeup equals love. :D
- Then Michelle came over... annd she asked me to "fix" her hair. I thought it looked totally fine--but, hey, am I really going to turn down the opportunity to do make up AND hair in the same day? No way! :) Looveedd it-- You can't tell from the pictures, but i did a bunch of twists pulled back. [Mom, I might not be around to do Britt's make up or the girls' hair, but my friends have me staying in practice] YAY. :)
- Michelle and I made the executive decision to casually stop by the dance... yes, go to the costume dance in casual clothes. :) Hey, I had orange and black on okay? I gave in at least a little. [We gave it a try, but the dance was not quite our scene...so we left after 3 minutes and headed to Hans's apartment...hung out there for a good hour or so.]
- Thennn, Michelle and Hans invited me to go with people from their FHE group to go see the musical, Sweeney Todd at 11. It was at an outdoor amphitheater [pretty cool]. A ton of deer passed behind the stage area in the middle of the first act. It was kind of funny because you heard a ton of whispers at that point... I think more people paid attention to the deer than the actors for those 30 seconds or so. :) Also, it started to rain just as Act II began, luckily it wasn't like DOWNPOUR or anything. Anyhow, I had a really good time and turns out there were a tons of people from our ward that went too. We kept bumping into different people. Good times. Basically, Michelle is my lifesaver and favorite :) She kept saying, "Caitlin, I'm glad we're friends." She's fabulous.
- We got home around 2... annnd called it a night :) A good one at that. Yay.

Costume Fun
Every year I say, "We are going to keep it simple. No big Halloween costumes, just use whatever is in the boxes." But every year we get such fun ideas for costumes, I can't help myself from creating something fun for not very much. The thing i've found with this approach t is, when you don't what to spend a lot of money, you trade what you save, for time you spend.
However, it is the time well spent with each kid that makes the time worth the effort. Even with a big kid like Wes. It was fun watching his design for his Key Blade, come to reality. Some PVC pipe, fittings, spray paint cardboard and lots of hot glue, put all together made for a pretty great looking prop for the Kingdom Hearts video game hero, "Sora" he portrayed. We shopped Salvation Army for the pants and vest (actually a ladies jacket transformed) Target for a cheap t-shirt, cut the fingers off of some gloves and ironed on some designs for fun. The hair was grown out for a couple months just for this character. You can't beat "Got 2 B Glued" Freeze spray for that amazing permanent wind blown look! Way to go Wes! Jaren and Brittan's costumes were really fun and pretty simple they made great Violets and Dashes from The Incredibles. Rilyn made a very cute Hippie and Teagan did use the Robin costume we put together last year, from the box.
No much else got accomplished besides costume creating and trick or treating today - hey, that was fun!

Rally's are Fun!!!
Yes on 8 Statewide Media Bus Tour Proves to be a Success
Yesterday wrapped up the very successful "Stand Up for Traditional Marriage" bus tour. After launching the tour last Monday in Sacramento to an enthusiastic crowd at Riverside Wesleyan church, we ended our statewide journey at Skyline Church in San Diego with a strong crowd of over 1,000 supporters. Nearly every single television station in San Diego covered our rally and witnessed hundreds of people expressing their commitment to restore the traditional definition of marriage on Election Day. - This was fun I went with my Mom and we yelled and chanted, got fired up by some super good pulpit pounding preachers and other leaders of the Protect Marriage organization. The best thing they said was . "It's one thing to cheer and wave signs in a parking lot, it's another to leave from here, make phone calls, and volunteer to help get the voters out!"

A Little Boys Dream Come True
Jaren loves big machines. Bulldozers, backhoes, scrapers and dump trucks. You name it he loves them. For mom and me "field trips" I scout the area for local areas that are being dug up or built up using big machines. The next day or so Jaren and I pack a lunch, walk or drive to the area, park, make ourselves comfortable and take in the live show. It is so fun. This morning the "show" was right in front of our driveway! Jaren must have been praying for this one for a while.
